Opposition Confronts Government Over Governance, Disaster Relief, and Rule of Law

Opposition lawmakers and political leaders have stepped up scrutiny of Prime Minister Balendra Shah's administration, accusing the government of arbitrary governance, neglecting disaster-hit communities, and undermining legal procedures following the midnight detention of former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.

Speaking in the House of Representatives on Monday, Nepali Communist Party Chief Whip Yuvraj Dulal criticized the executive for overstepping legal boundaries, eMountain TV reported. Dulal questioned the administration's late-night actions, stating that security forces took Rana into custody without an arrest warrant before releasing him within 12 hours under the justification of a security threat. Characterizing the episode as a display of state lawlessness and administrative overreach, Dulal argued that the nation cannot be treated as a private estate. He also highlighted that while the government was preoccupied with overnight arrests, citizens across Nepal were enduring severe losses from four consecutive days of relentless monsoon rainfall, landslides, and floods. Dulal urged the cabinet to immediately direct its resources toward search, rescue, and temporary shelter operations.

Echoing growing dissatisfaction outside the federal parliament building on Monday, Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal warned that the cabinet's current trajectory is unsustainable. As reported by Nepal Samaya, Dahal cautioned that the leadership will ultimately pay a heavy price if it continues to govern the country in this manner.

Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, chairman of the Nepal Samajbadi Party, also challenged the ruling leadership's record, according to reporting by Khabarhub. In a Facebook post alongside photographs of Prime Minister Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, Bhattarai expressed disappointment over the administration's performance. He stated that it is deeply ironic for a leadership elected on pledges of good governance and prosperity to retreat from pursuing high-profile corruption cases.

Bhattarai stressed that all state actions in a democracy must strictly adhere to due process, Khabarhub noted. He criticized the justice and law-enforcement system for continuing to penalize marginalized citizens over minor offenses while allowing well-connected figures implicated in major financial misconduct to escape accountability. Meaningful reform and good governance, Bhattarai argued, will remain out of reach until entrenched cartels and corrupt networks that exploit the state's resources are decisively broken.
