Surging Rivers Inundate Sarlahi Villages and Wreck Chitwan Promenade

Swollen by late-monsoon rain, the Lakhandei River breached embankments in Sarlahi, inundating settlements and ripening crops across Malangwa Municipality and Kaudena Rural Municipality. According to Gorkhapatra, runoff from an upstream breach at Chhapkaiya submerged Bhadsar and Khutouna, stranding families in waist-deep water and forcing schools to close. Malangwa Ward 6 Chairperson Ram Kailash Yadav explained that floodwaters cannot drain because settlements are hemmed in by an elevated Indian road to the south and dykes to the west. Sarlahi Chief District Officer Bijay Raj Subedi said authorities plan to plug the breach using bamboo and sandbags, though draining the stagnant water remains unfeasible.

Meanwhile, in Chitwan, the Narayani River swelled to a record 11.9 meters on September 27, ravaging Narayangarh's riverfront between Lilachok and Pulchok, Annapurna Post reported. According to Nagarik News, the surge destroyed Bharatpur Metropolitan City's "sea-beach model" tourism promenade, ripping up trails, turf, and lighting installed alongside a Rs 160 million provincial riverbank training project. Although the core embankment survived, the destruction has prompted public criticism over municipal spending in an active floodplain.
