Diaspora and Domestic Groups Mobilise Millions for Flood Relief
Nepali diaspora groups in New York, local business chambers, and school foundations have contributed over Rs 20 million in cash and relief goods for Bhotekoshi and Trishuli flood victims.
Community associations, business chambers, and educational charities have mobilised tens of millions of rupees to aid communities devastated by recent flash flooding along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors in Rasuwa and neighbouring districts.
In New York, Nepali emigrants from Upper Mustang raised $104,688 (approximately Rs 16.05 million) to assist displaced families, Onlinekhabar and Setopati reported. The funds were gathered through the Lo-Nyamship Association USA Inc., a Woodside-based non-profit organisation representing diaspora members from the Lo-Manthang and Lo-Ghekar Damodarkunda rural municipalities. According to Setopati, the association wire-transferred the entire amount to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund on September 28, 2026. The association noted that providing mutual support to their homeland during crises remains a collective civic duty, particularly for survivors rendered homeless by the destructive torrents.
Domestic institutions have also channelled substantial resources into relief drives. Kathmandu-based Hamro Sunshine School Foundation donated Rs 2.5 million to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund, Gorkhapatra reported. Foundation secretary and school principal Divesh Khatri handed over a cheque to Minister for Information and Communications Dr. Bikram Timilsina. Khatri stated that the contribution was raised directly from teachers, staff, and institutional members. Receiving the cheque, Dr. Timilsina stated that the government has placed flood relief, rescue, and rehabilitation as its foremost priorities.
Meanwhile, regional business groups are delivering physical aid directly to the disaster zones. A delegation from the Lamjung Chamber of Commerce and Industry arrived in Rasuwa on September 30 with daily relief consignments valued at roughly Rs 2.2 million, according to Nepal Samacharpatra. The team, led by chamber president Bharat Kumar Shrestha, transported foodstuffs, clothing, and essential household goods to families affected by the late August flash floods along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers.
The Lamjung chamber collected the provisions across multiple local chapters, raising about Rs 1.5 million from Besisahar, Rs 500,000 from Sundarbazar, and Rs 200,000 from Udipur, Nepal Samacharpatra reported. Chamber first vice president Bikas Shrestha noted that distribution on the ground is being coordinated alongside the Nuwakot Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The chamber previously deposited Rs 170,000 into the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.
The combined contributions come as government authorities and local administrations accelerate reconstruction and relief efforts across northern central Nepal, where seasonal flooding and debris flows have severely damaged infrastructure, farmlands, and settlements.
