‘Ba: Ek Yoddha’ Expands Screenings Beyond 100 After Rainy Opening Slump
Nepali feature film ‘Ba: Ek Yoddha’ crossed 100 nationwide screenings after overcoming rain-suppressed opening weekend sales, driven by Tuesday ticket discounts and strong audience turnout.
The domestic family drama Ba: Ek Yoddha has rebounded at the Nepali box office, crossing 100 daily screenings nationwide following a sluggish opening dampened by severe weekend rainfall, according to filmmakers and distributors.
Attendance picked up significantly on its fifth day of release after adverse weather suppressed theater footfall during the initial three days, Onlinekhabar and Setopati reported. A promotional "Deal Day" offering half-price tickets on Tuesday brought packed auditoriums across 79 scheduled screenings nationwide, prompting theater operators in the Kathmandu Valley and regional hubs to allocate additional slots by Wednesday.
Produced under the Artistic Entertainment banner, the film is written and directed by Hari Lamsal, with Basanta Lamsal serving as lead producer, Anil Budhathoki as executive producer, Krishna Kafle as co-producer, and Arjun Poudel as line producer, according to Gorkhapatra.
Generational Sacrifice and Critical Reception
The narrative centers on Rudra Prasad Adhikari, portrayed by Divya Dev Pant, a retired father from Kavre who endures severe financial distress to finance his son and daughter-in-law's emigration to Canada. The storyline follows his family's upheaval as the overseas children cut contact, leaving the aging patriarch burdened with mounting loans while managing turmoil in his daughter's marriage and his wife's deteriorating health.
Both Setopati and Gorkhapatra noted that moviegoers responded strongly to the emotional portrayal of parental sacrifice and the isolation elders experience when children leave the country. Viewers interviewed by the outlets stated that the film reflects widespread domestic realities regarding familial obligations and foreign employment.
However, a critical review published by Ukera presented a more reserved assessment, arguing that the production leans excessively into calculated melodrama designed to extract tears. While Ukera commended Divya Dev Pant's lead performance and praised director Lamsal’s musical compositions, it criticized several screenplay choices, including jarring tonal shifts, predictable narrative arcs, and overseas sequences that appeared unconvincing on screen.
The feature stars Divya Dev Pant alongside Jharana Thapa, Suhana Thapa, Maotse Gurung, Anil Budhathoki, Sagar Khanal, Shishir Siwakoti, Supragya Sharma, and Shavi Thapa.
