In the opening home match against Turkey, captain Kylian Mbappé scored the decisive goal from a Michael Olise assist early in the second half. Olise then delivered France's second straight win by scoring in the 88th minute of an away fixture against Belgium.

The start of Zidane's reign was tempered by an injury to Mbappé, who felt pain in his left knee immediately after scoring against Turkey and was substituted in the 59th minute. Zidane stated that the forward's knee was swollen and called the situation concerning, with Mbappé travelling back to Madrid for medical evaluation.
